Shoalstone Outdoor Pool Brixham

Shoalstone swimming poolThis is Shoalstone swimming pool in Brixham. Shoalstone is a tidal outdoor swimming pool located not far from Berry Head. At the time of my accident in May 1986, Shoalstone was left to fill up and empty on its own. This meant that at certain times of the tide, the swimming pool could contain various amounts of water. Unfortunately, I happen to dive into it when it wasn't quite full, in fact I have found after that it probably contained around 3 1/2 feet of water. I dived into what I considered to be a safe swimming pool. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. If the swimming pool had either been blocked when it was full or vice versa, I would have never of had my accident. But we can't live our lives on ifs and buts, the accident happened and that is something I have to live with for the rest of my life. I was just lucky that two lifesavers were walking past the pool at the time I dived in. If they weren't in the vicinity at that precise time, I think I would have been a gonner

After my accident, the council put up lots of warning signs and made sure that it was quite clear how deep the water was. The pool is still functional and is used by thousands of people in the summertime. Thankfully, it is completely emptied when not in use, so at least nobody will do the same as I did.
